Documento de proyecto
de la
Comisión Económica para América Latina y el Caribe
(CEPAL)

Project Document
from the
Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean
(ECLAC)

as published by the United Nations, March 2011

"Ageing and the protection of human rights:
current situation and outlook"
First, the publication develops the conceptual and theoretical models that have served as a basis to address the issues of older persons on the general academic and political agenda and then provides a general panorama of the rules related to the promotion and protection of the rights of older persons, both at the international as well as regional level. Also, existing national legislation for the protection of the rights of older persons in Latin America and the Caribbean are analyzed. Arguments are then identified that, from the Latin American and Caribbean perspective, justify the approval of an international convention on the rights of older persons, as well as the minimum contents that it should include. Finally, measures are proposed to promote the approval of this convention from the regional perspective.
